I can`t recall I`ve drinked in a long time a wine that changes more with air contact.
(could it be a bottle shock? I bought the wine from Munich airport and opened it immediately after the flight)
But I mean wow! First straight from the bottle I was a bit disappointed; wine was totally shut down, austere, almost angry. I drunk only one glass and let it on the table overnight and after 24 hours, a complete change!
Absolutely intriguing and complex aromas: liquorice for days, smoke, forest floor, herbs, strawberries with whipped cream.
On the palate wine is silky smooth, with fine acidity and tannins. Super dry, but with a sort of inner sweetnes. Alc. totally integrated. Higly delicious, intensive and broad fruit; strawberries, raspberries, perfectly ripe with surprising freshness. Quite savory. Nice secondary notes: liquorice, gravel, smoked herbs, hint of mint. Long long smokey and herbal aftertaste.
Balanced, classical, earthy CdP. Loving it!

Chateauneuf du Pape`s are for me winter wines par excellence. One of those wines you would like to open up on a quiet winter evenings beside a fire place, preferable after a long skiing trip.
But I do have to admit that I`ve had a somewhat on-off relationship with them. Sometimes they can be a bit too warm and alcoholic, and also a tad pricey for the quality. Furthermore there are nowadays many Southern Rhône wines outside CnP, that offer the same flavor profile and quality, with a noticeably lower price tag.
But when good, they are one of the most interesting and delicious wines in the world.

What a gorgeous vino!
Absolutely intriguing, deep and layered aromas: loads of smoke, aniseed, forest floor, vanilla, rosemary, forest berries, quite a bit of barnyardy stuff, some animal musk. Smooth and supple, yet explosive and mouth filling on the palate, with strong acidity and tannins; fresh strawberries, forest berries, grilled meat, blood, beautiful garrigue notes. Long, herbal and smokey aftertaste..
One of the best CnP in a while..

Another Christmas wine I had. This time from Southern Rhone valley. The Rhone valley and also the whole Provence, is an area that has always interested me. Its hard to pinpoint excactly why, but I guess its many things: The rugged landscapes, with brutal mistral winds, of course the Mediterranean climate, mesmerizing lavendel fields, awesomely sturdy cuisine, with all its beautiful herbs, beautiful wines.. But also as a History geek, the Medieval past, and specially the culture of the Troubadours. Names like Bernart de Ventadorn, Jaufre Rudel, Reimbaut de Vacqueras, Guilleme IX d` Aquitane have fascinated me for a long time. They were traveling poets / singers, who wrote and sung in old Occitan. They had an enourmous influence on the European poetry, and culture of the time, and are credited as an inventors of the concept of "Romantic Love". They Influenced also, to name a few, Dante Alighieri, the German Minnesingers(German version of Troubadours), and also none other than Geoffrey Chaucer.

Bouqet has lots of ripe dark fruits, but also strawberries and cherries. Somewhat oaky, vanilla, strong earthy notes, Barnyardy stuff.
On palate there`s nice ripe, tad bit jammy, strawberries and blueberries. Also quite a bit of chocolate. Really intense mouthfeel with surprisingly strong acidity, and in the end, big tannins. Alcohol is present, but not in a disturbing way, well integrated. Good structure. Leaves somewhat long aftertaste with even more strawberries, and chocolate, also some spices, but at the end this is really dominated by intense strawberry flavour. Which actually was the last thing I could taste from the wine, even after the "regular" aftertaste, they came haunting on my palate:).
Robust and powerfull CdP, made for ageing.
