Weingut Reinhold Haart Piesporter Grafenberg Riesling Kabinett 2012

Hot and damp weather with no wind is not really my favorite thing in Berlin. And as there`s no sea or big lake near, the whole city just seems to be inside a pot, boiling. On top of that, had to work inside the whole day; a cold Riesling was in place. So picked one up from a local wine shop, just a few blocks from my appartement, Weinladen Schmidt Prenzlauer Berg (if you`re in Berlin and in need of a good Riesling, check it out).

Feels like this is in a good place right now.
Quite intense nose: ripe pear, baked apples, hint of petrol, some saltyness (sea breeze feel).
Supple and also nicely dense palate with electric, but gentle acidity. Tropical fruits, with drops of lemon/lime. Honeyed and somewhat salty and grainy finish. Good length.
Elegant, refreshing, yet not too simple Kabinett.

Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2013

Weingut Max Ferd. Richter Brauneberger Juffer Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese 2013

Has been ages since I`ve drinked wines from Max Ferd. Richter. Their basic Riesling used to be one of my go-to summer quaffers...
Not much on the nose; honey, lemon, fresh morning dew (if that makes any sense).
On the palate a galore of pears and sour apples, with a good amount of flintyness.
There`s also a hint of botrytis in the background. Nicely balanced and surprisingly refreshing. Far from sickly sweet. Acidity gives a good lift; flavors seems to just float serenely over the palate.
Long aftertaste of honeyed pears, with even more honeyed pears and a drop of lemon. There`s some taste that reminds me of Berliner Weiße(or maybe it`s just some weird association).
Overall a delicious and supple Riesling Auslese

Clemens Busch Riesling trocken `Vom Grauen Schiefer` 2013

I don`t drink white wines in winter that often. A season for them starts normally at the end of march. But there`s no need to be a prisoner of habits.
A creamy seefood pasta was screaming for a Riesling!

Bought this Bio Riesling from a little wine shop in Berlin, Prenzlauerberg for 13 e. So not a big investment.

Shy bouqet of citrus notes, yeast, flintyness.
On the palate light bodied, lively, very citrusy with a high and piercing acidity.
Medium and a bit tart aftertaste of honeyed grapefruit and lemon peel rounded up with pungent chalkyness and a hint of smoke.
A solid, midweight, entry level Mosel Riesling. Nothing to write home about, but for the price this delivers.

Baron Knyphausen - Ortslage Erbach Riesling Kabinett 2012

As the spring has officially arrived, mind turns more and more from red wines towards white`s, alas, for me, it´s fair to say, predominantly Rieslings. Theme: value wines, seems to continue here..

Cistercian monks from the famous Kloster Eberbach founded the Klosterhof Drais in 1141. Knyphausen family, which is now making wines in seventh generation, purchased the property in the early 1800`s. So the winery can trace it`s roots all the way back to the misty haze of High Middle Age`s. Nicht schlecht...

This Rheingau Riesling is representing the second step (Ortswein) in the new classification pyramid formed by the VDP(Verband Deutscher Prädikats- und Qualitätsweingüter). And the grapes are coming from the vineyards surrounding the village of Erbach (Rheingau).

A bit subdued aromatically (though opened more on the next day): some lemon, petrol, yeast and in the background a hint of petrichor. Quite intensive fruit on the palate: pineapple, some peach, backed apple and lime. Feels maybe a touch sweet at first, but the strong acidity keeps the sweetness in check. It cleans and lift`s the whole palate and fruit beautifully, letting it float on a higher and more elegant level. The acids surely are strong and sharp, but not too violent.
After the midpalate happens something quite crude and sudden; the fruit turns to stone. Ok, please bear with me, It really feels that the fruit, which at first attacked intensely, glided and floated, oh so elegantly, through the whole midpalate, just abruptly crashes in to a wall at 200 km/h and breaks. It breaks in to a tiny, fine-grained pieces of limestone, marl, and whatnot. And what is left on the palate, is only a long aftertaste of intense mineral dust storm, no fruit, no honey, no citrus, nothing. Just a stoic Symphony of minerals. Fascinating.
Sure, this wine may not be balanced by any stretch of imagination, it`s actually all over the place, but then again it sure is interesting. I just don`t get bored with this; like a piece of art or literature that you don´t quite understand or even enjoy, but theres just something that draw`s you in. Surprisingly thought provoking wine, but kind of hard to rate. (Dunno, I may give up using the silly point`s anyway)
But, yeah in my opinion this is about as good as it gets for the price point, for a white wine.

Bründlmayer - Riesling Steinmassel 2013

I have been lately very impressed by Austrian white wines. The overall quality seems very high, they have stayed reasonably priced, and also when they do become a bit more pricey, they really seem to deliver, or maybe I`ve been just lucky. I`ve been a Riesling enthusiast for years, I live partly in Berlin, where wine bars and shops offer pretty good selection of them. Well, Berlin is pretty amazing wine town, to be honest. Bründlmayer is a producer that I`ve come across many many times, and been never really disapointed. This Riesling I`ve tasted in some party years ago, and it left a good impression, so decided to try it out again. Ok, for an Austrian dry Riesling it`s not maybe the cheapest one, but in it`s price category I would say this is a good value. I`ve tasted many German and Alsatian Rieslings lately(few Grand Crus also), in the same price category, that didn`t come even close to this one. Kudos!

Bouqet has some hay, green peas, overall greenness, cucumber salad, also (surprisingly) tomato peel. Flinty minerality, honey, and biscuits, very nice indeed!
Palate is energetic and zingy, with lemon, green apple, lime peel. Focused and fresh. Sharp acids. Really nice finish, with honey, white pepper, and a haunting, minerally aftertaste.
Pure, focused and delicious Riesling.
Great wine from Bründlmayer!
