Another Christmas wine I had. This time from Southern Rhone valley. The Rhone valley and also the whole Provence, is an area that has always interested me. Its hard to pinpoint excactly why, but I guess its many things: The rugged landscapes, with brutal mistral winds, of course the Mediterranean climate, mesmerizing lavendel fields, awesomely sturdy cuisine, with all its beautiful herbs, beautiful wines.. But also as a History geek, the Medieval past, and specially the culture of the Troubadours. Names like Bernart de Ventadorn, Jaufre Rudel, Reimbaut de Vacqueras, Guilleme IX d` Aquitane have fascinated me for a long time. They were traveling poets / singers, who wrote and sung in old Occitan. They had an enourmous influence on the European poetry, and culture of the time, and are credited as an inventors of the concept of "Romantic Love". They Influenced also, to name a few, Dante Alighieri, the German Minnesingers(German version of Troubadours), and also none other than Geoffrey Chaucer.

Bouqet has lots of ripe dark fruits, but also strawberries and cherries. Somewhat oaky, vanilla, strong earthy notes, Barnyardy stuff.
On palate there`s nice ripe, tad bit jammy, strawberries and blueberries. Also quite a bit of chocolate. Really intense mouthfeel with surprisingly strong acidity, and in the end, big tannins. Alcohol is present, but not in a disturbing way, well integrated. Good structure. Leaves somewhat long aftertaste with even more strawberries, and chocolate, also some spices, but at the end this is really dominated by intense strawberry flavour. Which actually was the last thing I could taste from the wine, even after the "regular" aftertaste, they came haunting on my palate:).
Robust and powerfull CdP, made for ageing.

Brunello from a traditional producer is always interesting. This one happens to be also in Alkos selection(Finnish liquor monopol), so decided to give it a try. Probably a bit overpriced, as very often is the case in Alko, not always though.
I haven`t actually tasted a Brunello for a long time, and I thought Christmas time would be a good excuse to open one up. It `s without a doubt one of my favorite wine styles in the world (but not so fond of the over-oaked, overripe and over concentrated style). Drinking this of course way too young, but was just too curious to taste this..

Bouqet has loads of ripe dark fruits; plums, figs. Also tar, liquorice, some smokiness. In the background ther`s hints of wet, rotten wood with mushroomy earthy notes. Surprisingly open right after opening, but with decanting the nose becomes much more fruit driven.
On the palate it`s medium bodied, driven by nicely intense dark fruits with earth, dark chocolate, smokiness, and surprisingly strong minerality in the background. The tannins are fierce in the finish, but not unpleasant, also quite a bit of nervous acidity.
Leaves an impressively long aftertaste with dark chocolate, spices, smoke, and in the center, nice bright cherry marmelade, which, after minutes I could still taste. The 15% alcohol is very well hidden. Delicious, powerfull,  traditional, and structured Brunello. Will age beautifully.

De Forville - Barbaresco 2008 / Ugo Lequio - Barbaresco 2011

I just arrived at Finnish countryside, central Finland, in the eastern shores of Lake Päijänne(second largest lake of Finland btw.) The first thing I always do when in countryside, is to go to a Sauna; no matter what the weather or season is, it`s mandatory:) First snow had just fallen, calming the landscape, giving everything a long-awaited tranquility. In December, just before the first snow, the nature seems always somehow restless and unease, like she just doesn´t know how to behave. But finally when the first snow falls, it´s like a warm blanket over the landscape, allowing the nature to go in to a peaceful and long winter slumber.
After the sauna, the mood was quite perfect for tasting some wines. Something warming was in place. So we decided to taste these two gorgeous, traditional Barbaresco. Young wines. Two different vintages, which is always interesting and enlightening.

Curious to taste this, as I tasted the previous vintage just month ago.
Happy to have them in cellar. Both are good vintages.
2010 seems a bit more classical and austere. Also what really was surprising is that 2010 had some interesting secondary notes, lacking in 2011: mentholy stuff, eucalyptus, black tea. Only 1 year more in bottle does that?.. or just the vintage?. 2010 has 14%  and 2011 15%. 2011 was infact a hotter year.
The bouqet is just very pretty; bright rasberry, cherry, leather, hint of wood, rose petals. Quite candyesque, cherry marmelade. nice!
Mouthfeel is intense, gorgeous focused rasberry and cherry, even some strawberries. Despite the fruitiness, the midpalate is still quite savory. Big tannins. quite strong accidity. Leaves a medium to long aftertaste with delicious cherry and rasberry notes rounded with smokyness. 15% alcohol does not show at all. Beautiful, classical, structured Barbaresco. In my opinion even better than 2010. Just a bit more umpf and character. This will age gorgeously.

A friend of mine in Langhe used to work in this winery during he`s summer vacation`s (nowadays he`s a Professor  in Torino university). Through him I`ve come to know this lovely winery, which I have had also the pleasure of visiting few times. I was pleased to note that Kerin O`Keefe features this winery also in her new book "Barolo and Barbaresco, king and queen of Italian wines".

I`ve already reviewed this wine. But hey, why not give it another go, interesting to see how it shows alongside with another traditional Barbaresco, from different vintage. 2008 is considered a classical, and in some cases a bit restrained vintage, which infact this wine also confirms.
Ok, this is a bit darker one. It`s actually not surprising as the Nebbiolo grapes of Ugo Lequio wines come from Gallina vineyard, which tend to be very light in color.
Bouget is also a bit darker; loads of smoke, leather, moss, cedar, autumn leaves. tar. Quite etheral, with Burgundian "Sous bois" elements. Quite intriguing and complex.
Palate is round, balanced but powerfull. Restrained dark cherries, rose petals, tar, spices. Very savory, salty, almost soy sauce like. This wine has actually some barley characters. Fruit is not as bright and focused as in Ugo Lequio ( 2008 vintage?). Tannins are huge, although starting to show a good balance already. Medium aftertaste with tar and spices.

Giacomo Fennochio is respected as a highly traditional Barolo producer, and has in fact kind of a reputation as a cult Winery. I haven`t tasted this Barolo before, though it has been in Alko`s (Finnish liqour monopol) selection for years. I`ve tasted the single vineyard bottling "Barolo Bussia", and as far as I can remember, it was excellent. So this is their "Barolo normale" a blend from different vineyards.
Pretty, and very rustic nose; pine needles, leather, tobacco leaves, smokiness, sour cherries and strawberries.
In the first attack there`s some red and dark berries, rose petals, and earth. Quite surprised by the nicely bright, yet restrained fruitiness that`s coating the palate. Firm structure, grippy tannins, good acidity, which is pretty obvious for a young and traditional Barolo.
The fruit tries to fight back against the structure and tannins, and kind of survives the whole journey, ending in a long and intriguing aftertaste: bone dry, ashy tannins, tobacco leaves, earth with sweetish, smoky fruit. Im quite surprised by the lenght and depth of the aftertaste. Which for me, with the bouqet, is the best part of the wine. It just floats beautifully, like the ethereally fragile Oboe in the opening of Mozart`s Serenade No.10, Adagio,K361. ("Yes your honour, I`m a wine nerd AND a music nerd").
Smokey and rustic stuff. Despite the youth, quite enjoyable now, but needs time to create some balance. I felt like the whole wine was still in chains, raging, just waiting to be released and show all its power and glory.

Guiseppe Cortese - Barbaresco Riserva 2006

Long live Nebbiolo!
One of my earliest (good) wine drinking memories has to do with Barbaresco. At a random dinner, way back in 98 in Italy, Turin, (underage then btw.) I tasted it the first time. I don`t remember the producer anymore, but the taste I can actually still pretty much remember, and that I really liked it.
In general, at that time I didn`t much appreciate the taste of wine, (yes, probably too much experiences in teenage house party "wine tastings" with cheap and bad wines. Not good..) and actually only got serious about wine years later. But I`ve always felt, that it was indeed Barbaresco that hooked me in to wine, and that early wine memory, back in the halcyon days of yore. So, through the years, it has always had a very special place in my heart:).
Of course alongside with Barolo, and Nebbiolo in general, which is pretty obvious when glancing through this blog..

This is a wine from a traditional Barbaresco producer. The grapes come from one of the most famous "Cru`s"  in Barbaresco; the steep and calcareous, Rabaja vineyard. Barbaresco - Riserva is only made in specially good vintages, and this is the winerys signature wine.
Aromatically very complex: exotic spices, black tea leaves, forrest floor, beautiful dark berries,  floralness, maby some hints of truffel as well. Many layers.
Mouthfeel is incredibly powerfull and intense; electrifying the complete palate. Huh, ok, this wine is a big boy. Delicious sweet and sour dark berries, earthy notes, spices, menthol, tar. Strong, but polished tannins, good accidity. Long aftertaste, leaving you gravitating for more. Addictively delicious wine. Despite all the power, this is very drinkable, but will last for ages, and develop.

Amarone della Valpolicella - Recchia, Masua di Jago 2010

Ok, I must confess: I haven`t been the greatest fan of Amarone`s in the world. Sure, I like them, dont get me wrong, just not enthusiastically. I`ve felt them often too unbalanced for the price, and just a tad bit bombastic, hedonistic and overly alcoholic for my taste.
But, lately I`ve found myself liking them actually quite a bit. They do have their time and place for sure, and when good, they can be damn delicious, I can`t deny that. And hey, it was also the favorite wine of Mozart:)
During my last Italian trip, original plan, after staying in Piemonte, was to drive straight and fast from Turin to Venice. No stops. But tired and also annoyed at the chaotic autostradas, we decided to change our plan, and stop for a day at Verona. A very atmospheric and beautiful old city, and not overly touristic (in Italian standards). Perfect for a few days stay. Our day of shopping, and just strolling aimlessly in the old town, ended suddenly, when the pleasant and warm early evening weather turned quickly very bad; chilling autumn wind with heavy rain pouring. So what to do? Find a wine bar, and stay there.. A time and place for Amarone!

Color is opaque to the extreme, like a stout beer.
Aromas are really jumping out from the glass; loads of ripe fruitiness, plums, raisins, chocolate, tobacco leaves. Very intense indeed.
Powerful mouthfeel, full of ripe plums, raisins, black chocolate, spices. Classic Amarone stuff.
Tannins are a quite low, only drying a bit at the end. Bitter, but not unpleasant finish and aftertaste.
Alcohol is quite well integrated, only slightly warming, which is nice.
A good Amarone.

This wine comes from an old and respected "Cru", Gallina Vineyard, in the lovely village of Neive, about 1,5 kilometers east from Barbaresco. If you ever go there, I would highly recommend the Enoteca "L`aromatorio", a fantastic Wine bar/Restaurant with traditional Piemontese cuisine, and a stunning wine list.
Barbarescos of Ugo Lequio are aged between 20 to 30 months in Slavonian casks, so much more than the 9 months minimum. Very transparent color, even for a Nebbiolo, but its not really a surprise because the producer is traditional, and wine has not seen new oak. Also wines from the Gallina "cru" tend to be very light in color.
Nose is somewhat tight; some leather, cherries and earth. But I had a flu, few weeks back, so I could have some issues with that.
First attack is beautiful; restrained, yet intense and delicious fruitiness, leather, black tea, eukalyptys. Elegant floralness. Nice accidity. It`s a young wine still, no doubt, tannins are big, but with decanting they do become smoother.
Nice finish and a long, bitterish after taste, where I also got some spicy black tea.
A classical Barbaresco, full of classical Nebbiolo beauty.

A young Nebbiolo from a Barbaresco producer, that kind of flies under the radar.
Honest, traditional, down-to-earth wines, and a symphatetic Winery, which I`ve
had the pleasure of visiting few times. It`s located right in the center of Barbaresco town, in the main street, right next to Gaja.
Intense color, somewhat dark and deep for a Nebbiolo.
Nose is pretty close, some blueberries, blackcurrant.
Jumpy accidity and firm tannins. Nevertheless, nice, full and even velvety mouthfeel.
Concentrated dark berries for days. Quite long, a bit spicy aftertaste, but still almost sweet even. Just straightforward deliciousness. Nice youthfull Nebbiolo.
A promising Prelude for the upcoming 2013 Barbarescos..

No big explanations needed for this producer. A Legend. Everybody with interest in wine in Piemonte seems to have their own stories and opinions about him; some nice, some maby not so nice; but nobody is questioning he`s wine making skills and importance to the region. Barbaresco, of course, wouldn`t be Barbaresco without him. He`s present is almost ghostlike.

Nose is a bit shy, yet intriguingly complex: cherries, liquorice, violets, chocolate, earth. Very firm tannins and structure from the start. But at the same time very drinkable, even seducing. Good acid grip. Dark berries with only a hint of sweetness, almost like berries with soy sauce and balsamic vinegard, quite dry. Also some woodsy stuff, black chocolate, earth, mushrooms, spices. Smooth finish with a long, earthy aftertaste.
In this wine, balance is everything; there is really no element that is jumping over another. Every part is sewed beautifully together. I Have to admit; this is one extremely elegant and seducing wine. A perfect marriage of power and finesse.  Is it worth the money? Well let`s not go there, it`s for another discussion (highly needed in Wine World btw.). Is it worth the hype? I would have to say yes.

The flagship wine of Marchesi di Gresy. Made from the grapes of Martinenga vineyard, the only monopole cru vineyard in Piedmont, and only in good vintage`s. 2008 was indeed a great vintage for Barbaresco.
Nose is beautiful: dark berries, hints of tobacco leaves, smokiness, herbal notes, earth with some funkiness. Very appealing.
Full bodied, quite tannic, but not in a harsh way. Good acidity. Intense mouthfeel, almost electric. Concentrated, delicious dark berries with savory elements. Quite salty taste in general. Even some smoked ham. So so delicious. And aftertaste is ridicilously long; just goes on and on, and lingers with more spices, earth, chocolate and meatiness. This is a Barbaresco at it`s finest; powerfull, yet elegant; structured, but not too austere.
A stunning wine.

Color is very opaque, brownish dark. Nose is powerfully earthy, like a slam in your face. Barnyard at 5 am.(yes, I`ve been there). Fascinating. Some dark fruits, spices and chocolate. But not sweet at all.
Really strong tannins, massive mouthfeel, full-bodied, lush. Plums, ripe cherries and dark chocolate. Long and spicy aftertaste. Alcohol is surprisingly well hidden. A balanced Amarone. Me likey..

Bought the Wine from a local supermarket for 14 euros,
so pretty much a no-brainer for a Barolo (although wines from this co-operative have not really impressed me, and 2009 is a hit-and-miss vintage).
When poured in the glass I could already guess a bit
where this wine is going. Very dark color for a Barolo,
has almost like a Barbera or Dolcetto depth in it.
Nose is pretty nice, kind of closed though; has some cherries, earth and oak, a hint of black tryffel, or maby im just dreaming. Basic stuff, nothing exeptional, lacks the otherwordly, delicate and multilayered nose of great Barolos.
But all that aside, the taste is nice; very mouthfilling, almost thick, fruit driven and surprisingly sweet, chocolaty and spicy, very enjoyable with soft and silky tannins, also some acidity. Ok structure.
I would put this more in to a normal Nebbiolo wine category, and in that company,
this would be a very nice effort.
So definitely a good wine, but an avarege and soft for a Barolo.

After dinner at a friend, in the hills of Langhe, Piedmont, we ended up tasting different Gianduja chocolates
and some Moscato d`Asti wines.
This particular wine really caught all my attention.
Totally clear, waterlike color.
Nose is very fresh and inviting. Green apple, lemon, some bisquite.
Much much drier than an averege Moscato. Super concentrated, intensive with fresh fruitiness. Mouthwatering minerals at the end.
Pure and focused wine. Beautiful stuff.

I tasted this after a nice evening of Sauna and practicing Bach...
This is a Rioja - Reserva I haven`t tasted before. I might be wrong because I could have tasted it in some wine tasting long ago in Berlin, but nevertheless not this vintage, so a new Wine for me...
Appearance is very dark, one of the most opaque wines I `ve seen in a while.
In the nose there are some ink, oak, orange peel, leather and spicyness.
Suprisingly "jumpy" wine, with very firm and tight tannins, and some accidity..
Lush and velvety mouth feel.
Chocolate, spices, oak, earthyness, but still nicely concentrated dark fruits,
and as the wine breathed, it became more chocolaty, and fruit driven.
Nice, medium to long aftertaste.
Youthfull wine still, needs some decanting to develop a balance..

Great Rioja! Will definitely buy some more..

I live part time in Berlin and there wine bars offer a fantastic selection of quality Rioja`s, and other Spanish wines. That`s also were I`ve learned to like them. I`m generally not so fond of too oaked style, and I gravitate more towards traditional wines, but Rioja`s are some of my exceptions in this matter.
This one  I haven`t tasted before, although I have heard many recommendations, and finally decided to try it out..
Color is quite dark, rubin red.
Nose is a classic Rioja: oak, leather, tobacco leaves, ripe dark fruits, actually I was surprised how fruity and sweet the smell was. In the background there is also some spices; cumin, anis. Very nice nose indeed.
The first taste is almost jammy, lot of ripe plums, really leaning towards New World. But although the initial taste is jammy and "fruitbomb like" its not artifical at all, it`s on the contrary very appealing. All is surrounded with strong, but not overpowering, oak, and with a nice earthyness. Also in the taste there are some spices, cumin, anis, and even some black pepper. The alcohol at the end is present, no Good Rioja with power and some rough edges, but still well structured and delicious.

Tätä samaa viiniä, ja samaa vuosikertaa on tullut maistettua muutama vuosi takaperin,
joten on mielenkiintoista nähdä miten maut ovat kehittyneet..
Viinin väri on erittäin läpinäkyvä, tiilenpunainen ja reunoiltaan ruosteinen.Tuoksu on melko ilmaisuvoimainen, hieman hapankirsikkaa erittäin maamainen, nahkainen ja melko mausteinen ja savuinen.
Maussa tulee hieman hillittyä punaista marjaa, jopa vähän mansikaa, hapankirsikkaa, ja nahkaisuutta.
Jykevähköt tanniinit pitävät viinin rakenteen hyvin hallussa.
Loppumakuun siirryttäessä tulee jonkin verran suolaisuutta, edelleen mausteisuutta, tummia marjoja ja savuisuutta. Loppumaku jatkuu myös erittäin pitkään. Muistin että viinissä olisi ollut jonkin verran kitkeryyttä, mikä silloin tällöin 08 Barbarescoissa ja Baroloissa tuntuu, mutta nyt se oli häipynyt.
Jos vertaan muutamaa vuotta nuorempaa versiota tähän, niin ensinnäkin se oli tanniineiltaan voimakkaampi ja siinä oli enemmän kitkeryyttä. Nuo elementit ovat mielestäni nyt hieman tasoittuneet, ja viini on muuttunut täyteläisemmäksi ja tasapainoisemmaksi.
Hieno viini. Konstailematon, hieman eteerinen mutta kuitenkin riittävän moniulotteinen ja mausteinen Barbaresco.
Muutaman viikon päästä olen taas Langhessa, Piemontessa ja tulee varmasti De Forvillen tilalta Barbarescoa mukaan napattua..

Dolcetto on yksi yleisimmin juotuja viinejä Piemontessa; todellinen joka paikan ruokaviini. Se on usein Nebbiolon, ja Barberankin varjossa, mutta puolustaa kuitenkin paikkaansa hienosti, eikä häpeile omaa
 olemassaoloaan.
Dolcetto on runsassatoinen ja varhain kypsyvä lajike, eli viininviljelijöille kiitollinen rypäle. Dolcetto kääntyy suomeksi jotenkin, "pieni makeainen".

Makeus nimessä viittaa sitten ehkäpä rypäleen pirteään, ja suoraviivaiseen marjaisuuteen. Mutta tosiasiassa Dolcetot ovat usein kaukana makesta, saatika imelästä. Ne ovat lähes järjestäen erittäin hapokkaita, joskus hieman tanniinisia, kuivia ja saattaa olla myös aika maanläheisiä. Itse on tullut juotua Dolcettoja Italiassa melkeinpä enemmän kuin mitään muita viinejä. Alkon Dolcetoihin en ole vielä tutustunut, mutta voin vain suositella näitä viinejä!
Viinin väri on hieno: melko läpinäkyvää ja mustan puhuvaa rubiinin punaista.
Tuoksu on mielyttävä, ei mitenkään erityisen massiivinen, pientä marjan makeutta, karvasmantelia, multaa, maan tuoksua. kukkaisutta, hitunen tammea ja tupakan lehteä.
Ensimaku on raikas, todella erinomaisen pirteän hapokas, kuin hieman raaka rypäle olisi räjähtänyt kielelle.
Happojen vähitellen poistuttua, tulee tilalle lievästi kuivattavia tanniineita. Kirsikkanen/marjainen maku kääntyy maan läheiseksi.
Loppumaku on yllättävän pitkä ja todella maukas! Tämä on viini mistä on ns. helppo pitää. Joskus se voisi olla viinille melkein kuin haukkumasana, mutta ei tässä tapauksessa. Viinin mutkaton maistuvuus viehättää.
Viini ei ole ehkä enää Dolcetoksi niin raikas, ja eloisa (Tämä on jo 3 vuoden ikäinen, eikä Dolcetot tunnetusti säily kovin hyvin).
Mutta minua tämä ei haitannut, päin vastoin; toi viiniin vielä lisää särmää, kuin jonkin uuden ulottuvuuden jota en Dolcetossa tiennyt (muistanut) olevan.
Voi olla että tämä viini laulaa jo joutsenlauluaan, mutta minä kuuntelen sitä mielelläni, pidän sen melodiasta…
Olen maistellut Dolcettoja elämäni aikana melko paljon, ja tämä tuntuu olevan helposti top5 :ssä  minulla. Voi olla tietenkin että asiaan vaikuttaa, että 
Lorenzon viinitarhat ja maisemat niiden ympärillä ovat minulle kotoisen tuttuja, ja viini melkeinpä kuin jonkun kaverin tekemää, mene ja tiedä..
Parin viikon päästä olen taas noissa tutuissa maisemissa; jos Lorenzon tapaan, niin pitää ihan kädestä kiittää...En meinaan muistanut että viini oli näin hyvä…

Jälleen viini Piemontesta. Ja tuttua tutummaltakin valmistajalta.
Opiskelu aikoina Torinon konservatoriossa, oli Barbera ehdottomia suosikeitani..
Ja sitä onkin tullut juotua Italiassa ollessani vähän liiankin paljon..

Väri on läpinäkyvä, vaaleanpunaiseen ja ruosteesen reunoiltaan taittuava, kirsikan punainen.
Tuoksu on sisäänpäinkääntynyt, jopa hieman tunkkainen,
sammalmainen, maamainen.. takana ehkä myös kukkaisuutta. Mielenkiintoinen tuoksu, mutta ei erityisen vahva.
Viinissä on erittäin täyteläinen ja melkein öljyinen suutuntuma. Jopa massiivinen Barberaksi.
Kielelle tulee vain kuin etäinen marjaisuuden aavistus. Tammisuutta viinissä on melko vähän. Mokkamainen kitkeryys, käristetyn pekonin ja maan maut sekä lievästi kuivattavat tanniinit hallitsevat täysin kokonaisuutta, ja jälkimakua. Jälkimaku onkin yllättävän pitkä, ja "umamia" paljon sisältävä. Lopussa on myös hieman kurkussa polttelevaa alkoholia. Ruokahalua herättävä viini...
Yllättävän vahvaa tykitystä Barberaksi. Puuttuu Barberalle ominaiset keveä hapot,
marjainen raikkaus ja tietty ilmaisun suoraviivaisuus. Mutta en sano että se on huono asia ollenkaan.
Tuntuu että viini flirttailee jo jollain tasolla Nebbiolon ja Barbarescon kanssa.
Ei siis viini klassisen Barberan ystäville (tai ainakaan minkä minä koen klassiseksi).
Bossotti tekee kyllä erikoisen rustikaalisia / vanhanaikaisia ja mielenkiintoisia viinejä, ei voi muuta sanoa.
Loistavaa parmesaanin, ja vahvojen juustojen kanssa.

Hohenstaufen sukuinen Friedrich I, Italialaisten Federico Barbarossaksi, punaisen partansa takia nimeämä, Pyhän saksalais-roomalaisen keisarikunnan keisari, esiintyy Italialaisissa legendoissa usein julmana ja peloittavana. Eikä ehkä aivan aiheetta: hän tuhosi lukuisilla valloitus retkillään Italiaan esim. Milanon ja Tortonan kaupungit lähes täysin maan tasalle.
Eräällä näistä retkistään, hän yritti saada Länsi Piemontessa sijaitsevaa Cisterna d´Asti nimistä pientä kaupunkia haltuunsa. Barbarossa oli jo vihdoin saavuttamassa, monien päivien pitkällisten taisteluiden jälkeen, kaupunkia ja sen portteja. Mutta yhtäkkiä, kesken kiivaimman ja kenties ratkaisevimman taistelun, hän, täysin yllättäen, pysäyttikin kaikki joukkonsa.
Tarinan mukaan, hän oli nähnyt shokeeraavan näyn: kaupungin muurin rinteillä runsaana ja korkeana kasvavat viini köynnökset olivat muuttuneet hänen silmiensä edessä, kaupunkia hurjasti puolustaviksi, verisiksi keihäiksi ja miekoiksi. Näystä pelästyneenä hän siis antoi joukoillensa nopean käskyn perääntyä. Ja näin kaupunki säästyi. Keisarilla oli kuitenkin jano ja hän poikkesi vielä ennen lähtöään juomaan kaupungin laidalla olevasta pienestä lähteestä. Tuo lähde pulppuaa edelleen ja on nimetty keisari Barbarossan mukaan.
Saksalainen legenda kertoo että Barbarossa nukkuu yhä Kyffhäuser vuoressa, Thüringenissä,  ritareidensa kanssa. Hänen punainen partansa on kasvanut kivisen pöydän läpi, jonka ääressä hän puoli avoimin silmin nukkuu. Ja kun vuorta jatkuvasti kiertävät korpit lakkaavat lentämästä, Barbarossa herää, ja palauttaa Pyhän saksalais-roomalaisen keisarikunnan muinaisen suuruuden takaisin.
Mutta siis asiaan, eli viiniin:)
Tämä kyseinen viini tulee siis juuri tuosta samasta kaupungista ja kenties juuri samasta rinteestä jossa keisari Barbarossa näki näkynsä keihäiksi ja miekoiksi muuttuneista viiniköynnöksistä.
Viinissä käytetty rypäle on Piemontessa harvinainen Croatina. Sitä käytetään usein sekoite rypäleenä esim. silloin tällöin Amaronessa.
Viinin väri on melko läpinäkyvän kirsikan punainen. Hieman reunoiltaan rusehtava.
Tuoksu on yllättävän vaisu. Hieman vaikea saada mitään irti. Vähän tammea ja mustaherukkaa.
Suuntuntuma on kevyehkö. Kielelle tulevat ensin marjan makeus, josta on kyllä vain aavistus jäljellä, ja heti perään hieman raakoja marjoja muistuttava kirpeys ja raikkaus. Viini onkin melko hapokas ja kuivattavan tanniininen. Ensimaun jälkeen maku profiili muuttuu merkittävästi. Pienen makeuden ja marjaisen raikkauden tilalle tulee, muut maut äkisti alleen peittävä, kitkeryys. Kuin Venäläisellä hyvin hyvin tummalla suklaalla kuorutettu, hapan ja vähäsokerinen marmelaadi konvehti, joka on tippunut mutaiseen maahan. Ja siihen sekaan vielä vähän tammea ja vielä pakastemustikoita. Melko erikoinen ja mielenkiintoinen, hyvin pitkään säilyvä maku.
On kyllä rustikaalinen viini, jossa ei turhia kulmia ole siloiteltu. Voin kuvitella että tällaisia viinejä on Piemontessa juotu satoja vuosia sitten.
Ei todellakaan ole aloittelijoille, tai uuden maailman viinien ystäville.
En ole oikein itsekkään varma mitä olen mieltä. Toimii varmasti ruokaviininä, mutta ei ole sinänsä mikään hedonistinen, nautinto viini.
Silti, varsinkin tuo pitkä loppumaku on yllättävän kompleksinen. Ja huomaan vähän ajan kuluttua pitäväni siitä.

Barbera, tuo Nebbiolon "vähäisempi serkku".
Juuriltaan syvästi Piemontelainen, usein turhaan aliarvioitu rypäle.
Tämäkin viini on Langhessa asuvan ystävän läheiseltä viini tilalta.

Yksi hienoimman värisistä viineistä mitä olen vähään aikaan nähnyt.
Burgundin punainen, viiniä liikuttaessa ametistin ja myös orvokin violettiin taittuva hypnotisoivan syvä väri.
Tuoksu ei kyllä seuraa intensiivistä väriä: mieto ja ei mitenkään erityisen inspiroiva. Lähinnä kevyttä karvas mantelista tammea, hitunen kirsikkaa.
Ensi maku on hieman makea mutta erittäin raikas. Kirsikkaa, soseutettua mansikkaa ja suklaata. Viini ei ole ollenkaan tanniininen, mutta suht hapokas ja keskimaussa kielen päälle hapot jää kevysti tanssahtelemaan. Tammi, marjat ja hapokkuus ovat mielestäni loistavassa tasapainossa.
Viinin keveydestä ja raikaudesta huolimatta jälkimaku on melko pitkä ja mielenkiintoinen, ja yllätti allekirjoittaneen täysin. En muistanut viinissä olleen tätä aspektia lainkaan:
pientä tumman suklaan kitkeryyttä, karvasmantelia ja tuota niin usein Langhen viineissä esiintyvää rasva-suola-paistettu pekoni umamia.
Yksinkertaisesti ilmaistuna erittäin maukas viini!

Viini on Langhessa, Piemontessa asuvan ystäväni läheiseltä tilalta.
Vincenzo Bossotti valmistaa myös Barbera d´Astia ja harvinaista Cisterna d`Astia (joista tulee myös arvostelu).
Viinin väri on Nebbiololle tyypillisesti aika läpinakyvä, haalean punainen, rusehtava ja ruosteeseen vivahtava(viinillä on jo hieman ikää).

Tuoksu on hapankirsikkainen, nahkainen, maanläheinen, lievän tamminen, ja jonkin verran yrttinen. Myös hieman mantelinen. Maku on yllättävän "hapanimelä" ja maamainen; vaikeasti määriteltävää, käristetyn lihan ja pekonin rasvaisuutta ja suolaisuutta (Savory). Marjaisuus on hillittyä, maukasta, mutta ei makeaa. Viinin jopa raastavan voimakkaat tanniiinit ottavat komennon hyvin
nopeasti haltuun, ja jopa peittävät makuja agressiivisesti alleen, mutta toisaalta kannatellen rakennetta.
Viini on muhkea, erittäin ryhdikäs ja voimakas. 14 prosentin alkoholi ei tuntunut maussa ollenkaan.
Dekantoin osaa viinistä noin 5 tuntia, ja maku muuttui paljon. Tanniinit antoi hieman enemmän periksi hedelmälle, ja makeudelle.
Viini muuttui myös paljon tasapainoisemmaksi ja helpommin lähestyttäväksi. Ja piileviä makuja alkoi löytyä vielä lisää: Mustaherukkaa, ja myös juureksisia maan makuja.
Loisto viini, jota on tullut juotua vuosien aikana paljon.
Erityisen hyvä voimakkaitten pasta ruokien kanssa..

Ensiksi on myönnettävä että minulla on ollut todella suuria ennakkoluuloja uuden maailman viinejä kohtaan. Oma viini innostukseni alkoi Italiasta, Piemontesta, jossa aikoinaan opiskelin, jossa vietän paljon aikaa ja joka on edelleenkin viini alueista ehkä lähimpänä sydäntäni. Ja kiinostus on pysytellytkin pitkään, vain ja ainoastaan Euroopassa. (tiedän, nurkkakuntaista ja eurosentristä..).  Mutta taas viimeaikoina on kiinnostus herännyt, muutaman hyvän kokemuksen jälkeen,
tutkia että mitäs uuudella maailmalla onkaan tarjottavana. Mutta itse viiniin..

Väri on aika helakka, kellertävä, hieman vihertävään taipuva.
Kun pullon avasi, niin pelkästään pullon suusta pöllähti uskomattoman paljon raikasta herukkaa, tai siis paremminkin herukan lehtiä. Klassista Sauvignon Blancia: ruohoa, passionhedelmän kaikuja, vähän mausteita,  ja herukan lehtiä tiivistettynä ja murskattuna.
Todella kesäinen tuoksumaailma. Loppukesäisen raikas. Kypsyvät marjat ja viilenevät illat..
Maku seuraa tuoksua: erittäin kirpeä, raikas ja kuiva. Kuin passionhdelmä-ruoho-karvias-nokkos-limetti-mustaherukan lehti salaatti johon on lisätty hieman mausteita, neilikkaa, valkopippuria ja aivan pieni hitunen hunajaa..
Superraikas kesäviini!
